Redefining Democracy: The Power of Wise Choices and Leadership

In many countries today, we witness people protesting and fighting for themselves or for others, often against their current government, its decisions, or public service departments.

Over time, the definition of democracy has evolved. This shift can be attributed to the sometimes careless approach of people when selecting their representatives. The process of selecting representatives has changed, with voters opting for leaders they believe will serve them well, rather than merely those who will lead.

In today's era, what should be the criteria for an ideal representative? It should be someone who can effectively lead and contribute to the development of their area, state, or country, rather than the other way around.

Sadly, speaking against one's government or its decisions is often labeled as intolerance, anti-nationalism, or even terrorism. Our democratic rights have become increasingly limited. We find it challenging to take a stand for ourselves or for others when something is amiss. Speaking against the government or its affiliated public service departments directly is often met with resistance.

In some cases, well-known public figures seem to appear out of nowhere, supporting such governments in the hope of gaining fame or securing a position within the government.

Today, journalism and news channels play a crucial role in shaping the definition of democracy. Journalism in contemporary times has been compromised in many countries. Instead of reporting real developments, they often present imaginary government achievements or half-truths. They sometimes create news to divert attention from core issues in their pursuit of high ratings and government favor. They magnify small to medium issues to make them appear significant, while core problems are downplayed or ignored.

To preserve our true democratic spirit, we must be discerning in our choice of local leaders. What factors should guide their selection?

  1. They should be approachable and preferably from your local area.
  2. They should be good listeners, patient, and resilient leaders who can fight for your rights.
  3. They should possess enough education to understand ground realities and the needs of the hour.
  4. Their track record of good work should speak for them.
  5. Their family life should reflect how they will treat you as part of their extended family.

If we want a national leader to lead from the front, what should we do?

  1. Try to choose a local leader with the above traits.
  2. If none of the candidates meet the criteria, report your disagreement to the polling booth officer. Do not vote for the sake of it.
  3. Based on your vote, make the national leader understand who is worth contesting.
  4. Let them face defeat if they cannot provide you with a suitable local leader.

As citizens, we need to be vigilant. Observe leaders in other countries who have shown how to guide a nation through difficult times like pandemics. Let's clear our thoughts and understand one thing: "The essence of faith is that humanity is the way forward." Distinguish between the real leaders and the impostors.

Applaud all the leaders who have performed admirably despite challenges. Acknowledge the opposition leaders who came together to assist the current government in these countries.

May God bless this world, and under strong leadership, we can emerge victorious. Let us raise ourselves, our communities, our countries, and our world as true democratic places for all because all lives matter!
